Professional Liability Insurance

Are you a director, manager, supervisor or in law enforcement in the U.S. Intelligence Community?

Professional Liability Insurance pays the full cost of your legal defense and covers the expense of damages awarded against you. Lawsuits against federal employees are increasing at an alarming rate. Members of the public - even fellow co-workers - can bring personal lawsuits against you. You are at risk whenever you are acting within the scope of your job - including delegating assignments, evaluations, working at your desk, or meeting with the public.

Frivolous or not, a lawsuit could still cost you thousands of dollars. The Federal Tort Claims Act states the government can choose whether or not to defend you. It cannot cover any monetary damages awarded against you personally. GEBA's Professional Liability Insurance is your best defense.

The total annual cost for $1 million in coverage is $266. Effective October 1, 1999 all federal agencies are required to pay half the premium cost for most employees, up to $150 per year. All full-time employees are eligible for the GEBA plan, however only specific employees are eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursement information is available through the GEBA office.

  • $1,000,000 of coverage for judgments arising from acts, errors, or omissions committed by you within the scope of your employment.
  • Administrative legal defense coverage up to $100,000 to pay the cost of defense and monetary penalties associated with administrative proceedings.
  • Protection against judgments involving personal injury, bodily injury, and property damage within the scope of your employment.
  • Protection against lawsuits that existed before the effective date of coverage provided the insured had no previous knowledge of such suits and no other insurance in force.
  • Discovery period of up to 36 months after retirement.
  • $5,000 on-the-job Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance.
